The range of cottage internal doors on sale at Leader Online
Below is everything you need to know about our different cottage door types, styles, colours, and finishes.
Types of cottage doors
- Glazed - If you’re looking to inject more natural sunlight into your interior to complement oak’s natural warmth, you need a glazed cottage internal door. These doors allow natural light to flow effortlessly throughout your property and create a harmonious connection between zones. They are best suited to dark hallways, corridors, stairwells, and various other open-plan spaces.
- Panelled - These doors are made up of recessed or raised panels and solid, opaque materials. They have an eye-catching textured surface, with a different number of panels on certain doors depending on the style. They also provide superior privacy and sound insulation to glazed doors and are best suited to period properties and busy, high-traffic commercial environments.
- Sliding Doors - Internal sliding doors perform a similar function to barn doors, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. They glide along a track mounted to the wall’s surface rather than swinging on hinges, making them ideal for compact rooms in which space is limited. They’re simple to fit, too, as the track sits on the outside of the wall. No further structural work is required at your end.
- Fire Doors - Our cottage style fire doors are a seamless blend of style and safety. To the naked eye, they look the same as any other cottage internal door, but with an added layer of protection in the event of a fire. They are FD30-rated, meaning they will withstand the spread of smoke and fire for at least 30 minutes. They also contain an intumescent seal around the edges which expands when temperatures reach beyond 200°C.
Materials and colours
- Oak - It won’t come as a surprise to you that some of our best-selling cottage doors are made from oak, as it’s synonymous with that traditional, rustic British aesthetic. A timeless and unassuming material, oak cottage doors work with and without glass and can slot into all manner of residential and commercial settings.
- Pine - Pine has a similar rural chic vibe to oak, and some of our best-selling internal cottage doors are made from this material. It provides a natural warmth that complements a contemporary colour palette and has a distinctive, unfinished texture that adds authenticity to your interior.
- White - Sleek and eternally classy, our white cottage doors add vibrancy and airiness to your interior. From a dining room in a period property to a meeting room in a brand new office, there’s a space that’s crying out for these doors.
Finishes
- Fully Finished - If you opt for one of our fully finished internal cottage doors, you’re sparing yourself hours of sanding and painting. This is because your doors arrive with a coat of lacquer that’s already been applied at our factory, and they are ready for you to hang.
- Primed - Purchasing a primed internal cottage door gives you a degree of creative control vs if you bought a fully finished option. Our primed cottage doors come with a base coat of white primer, ready for you to apply your topcoat in your chosen colour.
- Unfinished - As the name suggests, this type of door needs to be sanded, painted, varnished, and stained completely from scratch. It’s ideal if you want to put your own stamp on your door and mould it around your interior (and don’t mind spending a few hours doing some DIY).
These are some of the most common questions we get from our customers regarding cottage internal doors.
Cottage Door FAQs
What are cottage doors?
Cottage doors are designed to mimic the look and feel of a traditional cottage front door. They typically feature three to six vertical or horizontal panels and are available in a variety of colours, styles, and finishes. Even if you’re in an apartment in the middle of London, a cottage internal door works for your space and doesn’t detract from the wider aesthetic.
Why choose a cottage door?
Here are the main reasons why a cottage internal door is the best choice for you:
- It’s traditional and timeless in equal measure — a nod to the past that won’t go out of fashion in the near future.
- Rustic farmhouses are still a major trend on social media, and cottage doors align perfectly with this. Cottage doors are stylistically versatile, which means they fit within a multitude of contemporary spaces. They blend in without dominating the space due to their fairly neutral appearance.
- Their grooves are a bold piece of detailing that make a statement, give your home a modern vibe and act as a visual focal point when visitors come over.
How do I choose the right cottage door for my home?
When choosing a cottage door, you need to consider the bigger picture. What is the overall vibe of your home or building, and what are your visual and practical preferences? The answers to these questions will influence the specific style or finish you go for. For period properties, oak cottage doors with a natural finish complement exposed beams and stone. For modern interiors, white or grey cottage doors in a fully finished lacquer keep the rustic detailing without feeling dated. We offer a wide range of options, so you are sure to find a door that fits your needs.
Are cottage doors just for old homes?
No, cottage doors are sought by everyone from traditional country homes to new builds. They don’t age or date a building; they build on what’s already there. Exposed stone, brickwork, and timber beams all work really well with cottage doors, as well as plain smooth walls, which is a testament to their versatility and shows why they’re still so popular today.
How to care for a cottage door?
A cottage door is fairly low maintenance and simple to take care of.
Here are some general guidelines on how to care for panelled or glazed cottage doors.
Panelled: Start by dusting the door frame, surface, edges, and handles with a soft microfibre cloth. This will remove smudges, dirt, and other forms of debris. Next, create a mild solution of warm water and washing-up liquid. Dip your cloth into the water and wipe the door clean, rubbing in circular motions so that you’re lifting dirt and grime from the surfaces more efficiently. Once your door is cleaned, dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth to avoid the appearance of streaks or water marks. This will also prevent water retention, which could cause your door to swell or crack. If you have a primed door, avoid using abrasive sponges or applying harsh chemicals, as these could damage your door’s finish.
Glazed: To clean the glass on your internal cottage door, mix equal parts white vinegar and distilled water into a spray bottle. Spray your solution directly onto the surface of the glass, and rub away any dirt, smudges, or fingerprints using a sponge or cloth, rubbing in a circular motion. Dry your door with a lint-free cloth or squeegee to avoid streaks. Keep a close eye on the edges where the glass meets the frame, as this is where dust tends to gather. Can I fit an internal cottage door myself?
Yes, you can hang your cottage door by following the steps below.
First, you’ll need a tape measure, sharp pencil, 25 mm (1″) Chisel, drill, and two to three suitable door hinges, among other tools.
- Mark the position of the existing hinge, use these marks to position your new hinge, and cut around the pencil marks to make a recess in the door.
- Next, drill pilot holes for each screw in the hinge plate, which will help to prevent the wood from splitting.
- Using a suitable screwdriver, fix the screws in place and fully tighten.
- With the first screws in place, check the door opens and closes easily and fluidly so it doesn’t stick or resist.
- If you’re happy, fix the rest of the screws in the hinges.
- Once everything’s in place, double-check that you are happy with how easily the door opens.
- You can now fit your chosen door handle easily while the door is in place.
The whole process should take roughly one to two hours.
We’ve put together a really handy guide on How to Hang a Door which explains the tools you need and the step-by-step instructions you should follow.
