The DX style, renowned for its distinctive 1930s front door design, features the classic combination of glazing in the top panel and three square panels of equal size below, creating a door that's instantly recognisable and full of character. This range offers an impressive variety and volume, with options including white and grey primed doors, as well as oak and walnut in both fully finished and unfinished choices.
These doors come in thicknesses of 35mm, 40mm, and 44mm, and the collection spans standard doors, clear glazed, obscure glazed, sliding doors, and fire-rated FD30 doors. Whether you're restoring a period property or adding a touch of vintage charm to a modern home, the 1930's Style DX Doors range provides the perfect blend of classic aesthetics and contemporary functionality.
What are 1930s style DX30 Internal Doors?
1930s style internal doors, also known as DX30 doors, add a timeless charm to modern and period properties. They are designed to replicate the panel layout and proportions of doors from British homes that were built in the 1930s. DX30 is a common product code that’s used to identify this specific style.
The panel arrangement of a 1930s style internal door is arguably its standout feature. This consists of one large panel at the top of the door and three narrower vertical panels below. It’s inspired by the Art Deco movement, which favoured clean geometric lines and symmetrical proportions. This is a door that’s instantly recognisable and creates a bold statement in any interior.
Our 1930s style doors are constructed from a single engineered wood core (see ‘Core types’ below), which makes them less prone to warping than the original 1930s doors of the time that were made from solid pitch pine.
They're available in oak and white, and you can choose from different finishes (as we cover in more detail below).
Why should you choose 1930s Style DX30 Internal Doors?
A 1930s style internal door is classy, distinctive, and a natural fit for all manner of settings.
It’s best suited to a period property from the Art Deco era for obvious reasons, and is most commonly used as a replacement for a damaged original of a similar style. It can also be bought to match existing doors throughout your house.
However, you can also add it to a newer home if you want to add some vintage character to your space. The clean lines and simple geometry of the 1930s layout sit comfortably alongside modern furniture and decor in a way that more ornate Victorian or Edwardian designs sometimes can't.
The range of 1930s internal doors from Leader Online
We offer a diverse range of 1930s internal doors, with different types and finishes available depending on your visual and practical preferences.
Types
- 1930s Fire Doors - Our 1930s style fire doors are FD30-rated, meaning they can withstand the spread of fire and smoke for at least 30 minutes.
- Glazed - Our 1930s style internal doors with glass come in different glazing options, whether you want clear glass to maximise the flow of natural light or obscure for added privacy.
- Sliding - Our 1930s style sliding doors, slide horizontally on a track, rather than swinging on hinges and free up valuable floor space in compact rooms.
- Pocket - Our 1930s style pocket doors can slide all the way into a hidden cavity in the wall until they disappear completely from view and are tucked away (hence why they’re called ‘pocket’ doors).
- Made to Measure - If you’re looking for a very specific size and the standard sizes don’t meet your requirements, explore our made to measure 1930s internal doors, tailormade to fit your space.
Colours
- Oak - Our DX30 oak doors combine Art Deco heritage with rural rusticity and make your space feel cosy and timeless.
- White - Our white 1930s internal doors are versatile and will give your space a classic, period, or modern look, whatever you’re going for.
Finishes
- Unfinished - Most of our 1930s are unfinished. These doors arrive as raw timber, meaning you can sand, stain, paint, or oil them from scratch. They give you a blank canvas to work from if you want total creative control.
- Primed - These doors come with a factory-applied base coat of white primer, ready for you to apply your topcoat in your chosen colour. You spend less time finishing them than you would an unfinished 1930s style door and have more creative input overall.
- Fully Finished - These doors already contain a coat of lacquer that’s been professionally applied at our factory. You don’t need to paint or stain them; they’re ready to hang.
Core types
- Solid - Constructed from engineered timber, laminated wood, or other dense core materials and finished with a layer of wood on the face, known as the ‘veneer’. They achieve comparable insulation and soundproofing to a solid wood door at a lower price point.
- Hollow - Constructed with a standard wood veneer over a honeycomb core, which is typically cardboard or similar material. You won’t get the same sound absorption properties as with the more solid core doors, but these doors are lighter, easier to hang, and more cost-effective.
Hardware
You can complete your 1930s internal doors with different hardware, including door handles and knobs and locks and latches.
If you’re after a specific piece of hardware or accessory and need further guidance, feel free to contact our customer service team on 01429 241 270.
Can I hang my 1930s door myself?
Yes, you can hang your 1930s internal door yourself — with one caveat. Read below to find out more.
Hinged doors
Mark the hinge positions on the door and frame, chisel out the recesses, drill pilot holes, and fix the hinges in place. Check the door swings freely before fully tightening. This should only take you one to two hours. For more tips, check out our guide on How to Hang a Door.
Sliding doors
Fix the track to the wall above the doorway and ensure the wall can support the weight of the door and track system. Our sliding door kits include the rail, hangers, floor guides, and fixings. If you're not confident the wall is strong enough or would prefer for a professional to complete the job, consult an accredited carpenter or joiner before starting. This person should ideally hold qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations.
Fire doors
We strongly advise hiring a professional to hang a fire door, as incorrect fitting can compromise the door's performance in the event of a fire. Fire-rated DX30 doors need fire-rated hinges (BS EN 1935 Grade 13, three per door), and the intumescent seals must sit correctly in the frame to maintain the FD30 rating.
How do I maintain my 1930s style door?
Your 1930s style door will need very little upkeep, but the exact maintenance it requires depends on its finish and whether or not it’s glazed.
Primed and fully finished doors
Wipe the door down with a damp microfibre cloth and pH-neutral dish soap once a month, or whenever you notice dust or fingerprints. Dry it with a lint-free cloth to prevent the appearance of wet streaks.
Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the painted or lacquered surface.
Unfinished doors
Dust the door regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a protective coat of varnish or oil now and again, as this will stop the wood from absorbing too much moisture.
Panelled
Follow the same steps as for primed and fully finished doors (see above).
Glazed
To clean the glass, mix equal parts white vinegar and distilled water into a spray bottle. Spray your solution directly onto the surface of the glass, and rub away any dirt, smudges, or fingerprints using a sponge or cloth, rubbing in a circular motion. Dry your door with a lint-free cloth or squeegee to avoid streaks. Keep a close eye on the edges where the glass meets the frame, as this is where dust tends to gather. For more tips, check out our Step-by-Step Guide on How To Clean Glass Doors.
Sliding
Make sure the track is kept clean, as once it starts accumulating dust, dirt, and other forms of debris, this can cause your sliding doors to stick or judder. You can do this simply by wiping it with a dry cloth every couple of months.
Check the track fixings and any screws every six months or so and tend to them with a screwdriver if needed. These screws can loosen over time due to repeated usage.
General advice
Check the hinges every six months to see if any of their screws have come loose. Tighten any loose screws at the earliest opportunity, otherwise your door could start sagging, causing it to drag along the floor and scrape against and damage the frame.
What sizes are available?
Our 1930s style internal doors are available in standard UK sizes. The most common options are 1981 x 762mm (78 x 30 inches), 1981 x 686mm (78 x 27 inches), and 1981 x 838mm (78 x 33 inches).
Trimming allowances vary by manufacturer, so please check the product page before you order. If you trim a pre-finished or primed door, remember to seal the exposed edges to protect the timber.
As stipulated above, if you require a non-standard size, check out our made to measure internal doors or call our customer service team on 01429 241 270.
