What is a pocket fire door?

A pocket fire door is designed to provide at least 30 minutes of fire and smoke resistance. Its pocket door function is perfect for areas where space is limited, but still requires adequate protection in case of a fire.

All of our pocket fire doors contain an intumescent seal around the edges. The seal acts as a vital barrier, expanding when temperatures reach beyond 200°C and filling the gap between door and frame when a fire occurs.

What are the benefits of pocket fire doors?

Unlike standard hinged fire doors, fire rated pocket doors slide horizontally on a track gear that runs along the top of the cassette (the housing inside the wall cavity). When opened, the door slides sideways into the wall pocket and is hidden completely from view.

There are several key benefits of this design:

  • Aesthetic Appeal: The hidden cassette gives pocket fire doors a clean, ‘disappearing’ finish. This is ideal if you’re looking to achieve a contemporary, minimalist look and bring rooms together for a more open-plan feel.
  • Space Efficiency: Without the swing arc of a traditional door, you can free up around 10 square feet per door. This could be very valuable if you’re looking to accommodate a fire door in a small space.
  • Improved Accessibility: Sliding doors are easier to operate than hinged alternatives, making them well-suited to homes and residential buildings whose inhabitants have specific accessibility requirements or struggle with reduced mobility.
  • Sound Reduction: The door’s snug fit within the cassette helps to maximise acoustic insulation and reduce noise transfer between rooms, which is important for home offices, bedrooms, and meeting rooms.

Where should pocket fire doors go?

Given their range of benefits as listed above, pocket fire doors are perfect for:

  • En-suites
  • Home offices
  • Utility rooms
  • Small kitchens
  • Hallways and stairwells
  • Small meeting rooms
  • Booths in coworking spaces
  • Care homes
  • Hospitals
  • Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
  • Apartments and city flats with tight floor plans

Whether you're an everyday homeowner, managing agent, or responsible person at a commercial premises, our pocket fire doors are tailored to your needs.

How do pocket and sliding fire doors compare to standard hinged fire doors?

Both types of doors provide at least 30 minutes of fire protection.

Standard hinged fire doors swing into the room and are easier to retrofit. Pocket fire doors slide into the wall and save the swing arc but require more specialist installation.

If floor space is the priority, a pocket fire door is usually the right call. For a quick door swap, a standard hinged fire door is usually more practical.

What are the regulations for fire doors in the UK?

There are several circumstances in which residential properties must be fitted with fire doors, as per Approved Document B of the Building Regulations 2010. These include:

  • An internal door between an integral garage and the house.
  • Doors protecting escape routes in dwellings of three or more storeys.
  • Entrance doors to individual flats.

Fire-resisting doors must be correctly installed and maintained to ensure ongoing safety in non-domestic premises and shared parts of residential buildings, in accordance with Article 17 of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO).

For multi-occupied residential buildings over 11m in height in England, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require quarterly checks of communal fire doors and best-endeavours annual checks of flat entrance doors.

For high-traffic commercial settings, BS 8214 recommends inspections every six months as a minimum, with quarterly checks for the most heavily used doors.
