Our primed fire doors are FD30-rated, keeping fire and smoke at bay for at least 30 minutes, protecting lives and property. With these doors, you have complete creative control over the final finish. Each door comes with a factory-applied base coat of white primer, ready for you to apply your topcoat in your chosen colour. Whether you want to go with clean white, make a bold statement with a midnight blue or sage green, or meet somewhere in the middle with a charcoal grey, you have all of these options and more with our primed fire doors. They give you the flexibility that pre-finished doors can't. What is a primed fire door?
A primed fire door is designed to provide at least 30 minutes of fire and smoke resistance, in line with UK legislation. This is why it has an FD30 rating.
Our primed fire doors feature a solid core made from timber, particleboard, and other engineered materials (the core is the part that helps keep fire and smoke at bay).
The primer coat — a paint layer applied at the factory — sits on top of this core, but doesn't add fire resistance. Buying a primed fire door allows you to paint or lacquer the door to your liking, enabling you to have a fire door for your home in any colour you choose!
What do I need to know when painting a primed fire door?
There are several important steps you must follow and things you must avoid when painting a primed fire door. This will ensure your fire door still functions properly in the event of a fire.
Use a compatible paint
Most water-based emulsions, eggshell, satin, and gloss paints are compatible with a standard white primer. Avoid oil-based paints unless the manufacturer's specification explicitly states that it’s compatible with primed fire doors.
Apply paint in thin coats
Thick coats can cause the door to stick in the frame and may interfere with fitting tolerances.
Apply at least two topcoats
One coat rarely provides full coverage, particularly if you go for a darker colour. Allow proper drying time between coats, as specified on the paint tin.
Never paint over the intumescent seal
We can’t stress this point enough. The seal performs a vital protective role, expanding as the temperature rises to block the spread of fire and smoke. Painting over it could compromise its expansion and the door’s overall performance were a fire to occur in your property or building. That’s why you need to mask the seal carefully before doing any painting.
Avoid painting hinges and certification labels
Again, you could compromise the door’s performance by painting on hinges, as this can interfere with its ability to swing and self-close, which is a vital function for any fire door. You may also inadvertently make the certification label less visible — if you’re a commercial landlord or responsible person at a commercial premises, the label must be visible so that you can prove the door's fire rating during inspections.
What are the differences between primed, pre-finished, and unfinished fire doors?
Whereas primed fire doors give you the option to paint your topcoat, you don’t have this option with other door types. There are benefits and drawbacks to this lack of customisability.
Pre-finished fire doors arrive fully finished and ready to hang, in a fixed colour or wood-effect surface. No further work is needed at your end, but you also don’t have any creative control over the look or finish.
Unfinished fire doors arrive as raw timber, requiring staining or oiling, and painting from scratch. This is the most flexible option for customers because you can decide exactly what finish and fittings you would like on the door. However, it can also be time and labour-intensive.
If you want a specific colour, a primed fire door is the most practical choice. It's quicker than starting with an unfinished door, and far more flexible than buying a pre-finished option.
Where should I install a primed fire door?
From an aesthetic standpoint, a primed fire door is perfect for the following:
- Renovation projects when you’re still deciding on the final interior colour scheme.
- Period properties featuring heritage colour tones.
- Rental properties and HMOs where landlords want consistency across multiple doors at a competitive price.
- Statement hallways, kitchens, and any living space that requires a bold or specific colour.
- New builds where the colour scheme needs to adhere to a stringent design brief.
On a practical level, these are the most common settings for a primed fire door:
- Kitchens
- Utility rooms / boiler cupboards
- Any door leading from a house into an attached garage
- Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
- Blocks of flats (i.e., entrance doors to individual flats and doors leading to communal stairwells)
- Schools, Universities, and Hotels
- Bars, restaurants, and retail spaces
