A shaker style door gets its name and appearance from a Manchester-based religious group, the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, more commonly known as The Shakers due to their energetic singing, trembling, and dancing during worship.

After emigrating to New England in the late 18th century, the Shakers became renowned for their intricate woodworking skills. Their people took pride in crafting high-quality, unobtrusive furniture, as they believed that simplicity in design reflected their honest way of life. They had no interest in decorative profiling or ornate moulding, as they believed that such details were unnecessary and an overembellishment. 

That’s why the shaker doors that you see on our website are defined by their simplicity. They’re adorned with one or more flat, recessed panels set within a clean rectangular frame. It's an intentionally stripped-back look that lets the proportions and materials speak for themselves. 

Unlike other door styles, a shaker style internal door doesn’t symbolise a specific era of interior design. Its minimalist aesthetic and unerring adaptability, in spite of the many trends which have come and gone over the years, are what make it so unique.

Finishes

• Primed - Most of our shaker internal doors are primed, which means they arrive with a coat of white primer that’s been professionally applied at our factory. You can either leave the door as is or top it up with a topcoat in the colour of your choice. It’s completely up to you.
• Unfinished - This is our second most popular type of finish in the shaker door range. Unfinished doors arrive as raw timber, meaning you can sand, stain, paint, or oil them from scratch. They give you a blank canvas to work from if you want total creative control.
• Fully Finished - Our fully finished shaker style doors arrive with a coat of lacquer that our team has applied at the factory. You don’t need to paint or stain them; they’re ready to hang from the moment they arrive.

Core types

• Solid - Constructed from engineered timber, laminated wood, or other dense core materials and finished with a layer of wood on the face, known as the ‘veneer’. They achieve comparable insulation and soundproofing to a solid wood door at a lower price point. 
• Hollow - Constructed with a standard wood veneer over a honeycomb core, which is typically cardboard or similar material. You won’t get the same sound absorption properties as with solid core doors, but these doors are lighter, easier to hang, and more cost-effective.

Shaker doors need very little maintenance. Their flat, recessed panels collect less dust than more ornately profiled doors, which makes them one of the easiest styles to keep clean.

Wipe down with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap once a month or whenever marks appear. Dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Keep any scuffs or chips touched up to ensure longevity of your shaker door.

If your shaker door has glazed panels, clean the glass with a standard glass cleaner or a white vinegar and water solution. Dry with a lint-free cloth or squeegee. Pay attention to where the glass meets the frame, as dust gathers in those joints.

Check the hinge screws every six months and tighten any that have come loose.
