What are the differences between internal French doors and double doors?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, French and double doors are not the same product.

French doors are a specific type of double door that features large glass panels running across the length of the door’s surface. They let in an abundance of natural light and seamlessly connect different zones or living spaces.

Double doors are like French doors, only without glass (or unglazed). When we use the phrase ‘double doors’, we mean any panelled pair of doors that meet in the middle.

Are double doors more expensive than single doors?

Yes, you can expect to pay roughly twice as much for a double door as you would for a single door, or slightly more depending on the material, finish, and glazing.

The reasons double doors are more expensive are obvious. Not only are you paying for more door panels, but you’re also paying for the installation. Aligning a pair of doors in the middle, or doorway, is more time-consuming and complex than hanging a single hinged door.

That said, the cost is usually justified by the impact. A pair of doors creates a much wider opening, transforms the feel of a room, and adds a sense of occasion that a single door can't replicate.

What maintenance is required for double doors?

Double doors should be maintained in virtually the same way as any other door.

You should wipe them down using a damp microfibre cloth mixed with dish soap or mild washing-up liquid around once a month.

If you’ve got oak double doors, you may need to apply a protective coat of paint, varnish, or oil if you notice the existing layer start to flake or crack or if the wood starts looking faded or grey.

The hinges are worth keeping an eye on, as well. This is because the seal between your doors can wear over time through repeated opening and closing, causing the doors to shift slightly on their hinges and leave a visible gap.

You can stop the gap from getting too big by checking your hinge screws every six months and tightening up any that have come close. If a gap develops between the two leaves, the hinges may need adjusting to bring the doors back into alignment.

How do I clean French doors?

Clean your French doors’ glazed panels using a white vinegar and water solution and dry them with a lint-free cloth to avoid the appearance of wet streaks. Wipe in circular motions, as this will eliminate smudges and trap dirt and debris rather than simply pushing it around.

For unfinished timber, dust regularly and apply a protective treatment (varnish, oil, or wax) as needed to prevent moisture absorption.
