Why choose an internal panel door?
An internal panel door offers a bit of everything: elegance, character, functionality, and durability:
- Panel doors work in just about any setting, from a suburban, Victorian house to a new-build city centre flat, due to their timeless appearance.
- Recessed and raised panels, with striking geometric shapes can act as visual focal points, creating a textured surface that helps adds depth to a room.
- They are one of the most affordable door styles available, with prices starting from as low as £15 to £20 per door with Leader Online. This price point is ideal if you’re looking to install multiple doors in your property, working to a tight budget, or managing a particularly cost-conscious renovation project.
- Our solid engineered core panel doors provide excellent sound and heat insulation, making them perfect for both homes and commercial offices.
Panel Door FAQs
What types of internal panel doors are available?
You can choose from doors with just one panel to doors featuring seven panels when you shop with Leader Online.
The type of door you pick depends on the wider look and feel of your space and what you think would most complement it.
Here’s a rundown of the most common configurations and what each of them offers.
- 2 panel doors - They have a simple, symmetrical layout consisting of two vertical or horizontal rectangular panels that bridges the gap between modern and traditional architecture. They're clean and understated, and are one of the most popular types of panelled internal doors in the UK.
- 4 panel doors - These are arguably the most popular style when it comes to internal panel doors. In fact, some of our best-selling internal panel doors are 4 panel Victorian and 1930s doors. This classic layout has been a staple of British homes for centuries and is best-suited to period and cottage-style properties. You’ll commonly find it in bedrooms, bathrooms, and home offices.
- 5 panel doors - Closely linked to the Cottage and Shaker door styles, this configuration works well in country-style interiors and older properties.
- 6-panel doors - This configuration gives off a more formal, traditional appearance. It’s most commonly seen in Georgian properties and suits spaces where you want the door to be a prominent part of the design rather than an item that blends into the background.
What colours and finishes do panel doors come in?
You can get internal panel doors in a variety of colours and finishes. Our three most popular colours in this style are White, Oak, and Pine, but we also stock Black, Walnut, and Grey options.
For finishes, you can choose from three options. We’ve listed the finishes in descending order from most to least stocked.
- Primed - Have a factory-applied base coat of primer and are ready for you to apply your topcoat in your chosen colour.
- Unfinished - Raw timber doors ready for you to paint or stain from scratch. This option gives you the highest levels of flexibility and creative control.
- Fully Finished - Delivered with a coat of lacquer that’s been professionally applied at our factory. You don’t need to paint or stain them; they’re ready to hang as soon as they arrive at your front door.
What hardware do I need for my internal panel door?
You need hinges, a latch and lock, and a handle or knob for your door at the very least.
If you’re buying a panel door for your bathroom, you may want to choose a specialist bathroom lock for added privacy.
You can see which door furniture goes best with your chosen panelled door by consulting the Frequently Bought Together section that’s embedded on each product listing.

What sizes do panel doors come in?
Our panelled internal doors are available in standard UK sizes. Their heights range from 1981mm (or 78 inches) to 2040mm (or 80.3 inches). Widths range from 457mm (or 18 inches) to 838mm (or 33 inches).
Most panel doors can be trimmed to fit non-standard openings, but trimming allowances vary by manufacturer, so please check the product page before placing your order. If you trim a pre-finished or primed door, you must seal the exposed edges to protect the timber.
If you have a more specific size requirement, we also offer made to measure internal doors. Call our team on 01429 241 270 to discuss.
Can I fit a panel door myself?
Yes, it’s straightforward to fit a standard hinged panel door yourself.
You’ll need a tape measure, sharp pencil, 25 mm (1″) Chisel, drill, and two to three suitable door hinges, among other tools. Steps include drilling pilot holes for each screw in the hinge plate, fixing and tightening the screws, checking the door opens and closes properly, and then fixing the rest of the screws in the hinges.
The whole process should take up to two hours. For more information, check out our guide How to Hang a Door.
If you choose a pocket or sliding panel door, we advise you not to attempt installing it yourself, as the process is much more complex. Instead, you should reach out to an accredited joiner or carpenter. This person should ideally hold qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations.
Likewise, if you purchase a panelled fire door, using a professional is very important, as incorrect fitting can compromise the door's performance in the event of a fire. These doors need fire-rated hinges (BS EN 1935 Grade 13, three per door), and the intumescent seals must sit correctly in the frame.
How do I maintain my internal panel doors?
Panelled doors are pretty low maintenance. As long as you do the basics, your door will stay in good working order. Here are some tips based on the type of door you choose.
General advice
Give the recesses and edges of the raised or recessed sections a light dusting once a month to remove stains or dirt.
If you have a hinged internal panel door, lubricate your hinges periodically using silicone spray so that your door can continue to open and close properly.
Primed and fully finished
Wipe your door down with a soft, damp cloth and pH-neutral dish soap once a month (or whenever you notice marks starting to build up).
Unfinished
Dust the door regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a protective coat of varnish or oil now and again to stop the wood from absorbing too much moisture.
