Sliding, Bifold & Room Dividers

We recognise that certain settings demand efficient use of space.

That’s why we stock these specialised interior doors:

  • Internal Sliding Doors - These doors slide horizontally on a track rather than swinging on hinges. They’re perfect for compact rooms where there’s less space for a door to swing. We also offer pocket doors, with a hidden track and frame.
  • Internal Bifold Doors - Another space-saving option which is ideal for pantries and connecting rooms, such as kitchens leading to dining rooms.
  • Room Dividers - Best-suited to larger, open-plan spaces, they can be left open to create a sense of space or closed to help retain heat and cosiness. Pick from a variety of sizes, colours and materials such as oak and white dividers.

How do I choose an internal door?

You have some important factors to consider and some burning questions to ask yourself before you choose a specific type of internal door for your property or building.

Is sound insulation essential? If so, opt for solid engineered doors. Do you want to maximise the flow of natural light? If so, glazed should be your go-to. Are you working to a tight timeframe? If so, choose a fully finished door. Will your door be installed in a commercial building or HMO? If so, you may need a fire door to ensure compliance. Have a limited budget? Go for a lighter hollow core door.

Style and practicality are equally important and neither should be overlooked. Thanks to our extensive range of internal door types and styles, you’ll find something in our internal doors range that ticks both boxes.

What are the different finishes available for internal doors?

You can select from a variety of finishes when you purchase one of our internal doors, depending if you want to simply buy and hang the door or paint and stain to your liking.

They are as follows:

  • Fully Finished Internal Doors - They already have a coat of lacquer applied, and are ready to hang in a fixed colour or wood-effect surface. This saves you time, effort, and mess.
  • Primed Internal Doors - They come with a factory-applied base coat of primer, ready for you to apply your topcoat in your chosen colour.
  • Unfinished Internal Doors - They arrive as raw timber, ready for you to paint or stain from scratch. This is the most flexible option as you can decide exactly what finish you would like on the door. It’s a more cost-effective option than a pre-finished door if you don’t mind doing some DIY.

What are the different types of internal door cores?

There are two main door core types which you need to know about.

Solid Engineered Core - The core of these doors is built from either multiple layers of timber or engineered wood or a single material then covered with a layer of wood on the face, known as the ‘veneer’. They achieve comparable insulation and soundproofing to a solid wood door at a lower price point.

Hollow Core - These doors are constructed as with a standard wood veneer over a honeycomb core, which is typically cardboard or similar material. You won’t get the same sound absorption properties as with the more solid core doors, but these doors are lighter, easier to hang, and more cost-effective.

What are the most popular internal door sizes?

When buying a new internal door, you must make sure that it is the right size for the opening. With this in mind, below is a list of the most standard UK internal door sizes. If you want to convert any of these measurements to feet and inches or just inches, check out our handy size guide.

  • 1981 x 762 x 35mm - Also called a 2’6” door, the 78x30 inch door is the most common internal door size in England and Wales.
  • 1981 x 838 x 35mm – Also known as a 2’9” door, this is the best size for mobility and wheelchair access.
  • 1981 x 457/533 x 35mm – This door size is often used for cupboard or wardrobe doors.
  • 1981 x 610/686 x 35mm – A popular door size for restricted spaces where a smaller door is needed.

We have introduced Made to Measure Internal Doors to our range if you’re looking for a very specific size, with dimensions up to 2400mm x 1200mm and thickness from 35mm.

Other FAQs about internal doors

These are some of the most common questions we get from our customers regarding internal doors.

How do I measure an internal door?

Measure the width across the top, middle, and bottom of the door or the opening, then measure the height from the top of the door to the bottom in a straight line. Next, measure the door thickness by running your tape measure from the edge of one side to the edge of the other. If your opening already has a frame fitted, your measurement should be "frame-to-frame". If there’s no door or frame, measure the rough opening size (width and height) and consider any adjustments you may need to make when it comes to framing. Once you have all three measurements, repeat the process for each door you want to replace. Not all internal doors will be the same size or thickness, so you should measure each door individually. For a full walkthrough, see our guide to measuring a door.

What are the trimming allowances for internal doors?

The trimming allowances for internal doors vary depending on the door's core type, material, and whether it's glazed or fire-rated. Always check the trimming allowance listed on the individual product page before ordering an internal door. Trimming beyond the manufacturer's allowance could void your warranty and, in the case of a fire door, compromise its ability to function in the event of a fire. For more information on allowances and best practices, check out our guide to trimming engineered timber doors.

What's trending for internal doors?

The Farley Door range continues to be popular and is arguably the most on-trend style right now. The modern 5 panel cottage door has a timeless appeal and is suitable for a range of interiors.

We’re still seeing a lot of customers purchasing glazed doors due to their elegance and vibrancy, perfect for dining rooms and kitchens, while internal white doors continue to be popular for their effortless style and ability to brighten an interior. Primed white doors are commonly purchased so customers can paint them to any colour of their choosing.

If you’re looking to add character to a traditional front room, oak doors are your best bet. Their warm, natural colouring complements classic decor, and their popularity is in-keeping with the heavy shift towards nature-inspired design which we’re seeing across the interior design space.

For an on-trend office space, we recommend glass panel doors like you can see within our industrial style door range. These doors are sleek and professional and their glass panels promote an open, collaborative atmosphere. They allow light to flow freely in the space, enhancing productivity and creating a sense of spaciousness. Alternatively, internal flush doors with minimalist designs offer a clean and streamlined look that aligns with modern office environments.

Can I paint an internal door?

Yes, you can paint unfinished and primed internal doors in the colour of your choice. Just make sure you finish the door with a topcoat of lacquer to ensure the paintwork is protected from smudges and accidental knocks or dings.

Does Leader Online offer custom-sized internal doors?

Yes, we provide made to measure internal doors that are crafted to fit your specific space. If you’re working to an exact specification and need something even more bespoke, let our sales team know and they’ll steer you in the right direction.

Can I install interior doors myself?

Yes, you can install interior doors yourself, and it’s a fairly simple task, but we still advise hiring a professional. This will ensure that you get the best results and the installation is carried out safely for your peace of mind.

Some of the doors in our range are very heavy, i.e., Solid Core and Fire Doors, and typically require at least two people to install them.

For Fire Doors specifically, we'd recommend hiring a professional to ensure the door is fitted correctly, the intumescent seals engage properly, and the FD30 rating isn't compromised.

How much do Leader Online’s internal doors cost?

We have something to suit every budget and preference. Our internal doors typically range from as little as £10 to £400+. Factors influencing cost include the materials, construction, and whether the door is a standard or bespoke size. More specialised doors such as sliding and bifold doors cost more than standard internal doors.

How much does it cost to fit an interior door?

Internal door labour costs in the UK are anywhere between £100 and £350 per door, with the average cost sitting at around £250 per door, as per data from Checkatrade.

According to MyBuilder, you can expect to pay roughly £50 to £500 per door, depending on the material, design and finish you choose.

These figures give you a very good idea of how much it costs to fit an interior door. £200 to £300 is a good middle-of-the-road estimate.

Where can I put an internal door?
