Is laminate flooring a smart choice for the living room?

It’s one of the most practical options available. Unlike real wood, which can scratch or dent under the weight of sofas and coffee tables, quality laminate features a toughened wear layer designed for real life. It’s also incredibly easy to maintain; a quick sweep and a damp mop are all it takes to keep your lounge looking pristine. For a living room, we usually recommend a 10mm or 12mm thickness for that extra-solid feel and better sound dampening.

How much does it cost to put laminate flooring in a living room?

The total cost depends on three main factors: your room size, plank quality, and underlay. While 7mm boards are very budget-friendly, investing slightly more in a thicker 10mm or 12mm board often pays off in the long run through better durability. Don’t forget to factor in the essentials—a quality underlay and matching scotias or skirting boards to give the project that professional, finished look.

Which way should I lay laminate flooring in my living room?

The general rule is to lay the planks parallel to the main light source (usually the largest window). This allows light to run along the boards' length, highlighting the grain and making the room feel more seamless. However, if your living room is particularly narrow, laying the planks across the width can help "push" the walls out visually, making the space feel wider and more balanced.

Where should I start laying laminate flooring in a living room?

The secret to a stress-free fit is all in the first row. You’ll want to start along your longest, straightest wall—this gives you a reliable baseline to build out from.

Top Tip: Most walls aren't as straight as they look. Before you click anything together, check for any wonky sections. If the wall is uneven, you might need to 'scribe' (carefully trim) the first row of boards so they follow the line of the wall perfectly. It takes a few extra minutes at the start, but it ensures the rest of your floor stays straight and gap-free as you move across the room.
