How does an oak fire door work?

Our oak fire doors have an engineered solid timber core which is FD30-rated and meets the UK’s strict fire safety regulations. As such, they can withstand heat and resist fire for at least 30 minutes. An intumescent seal also needs to be situated around the edges of the door, typically installed into the fire door frame itself. This seal expands when temperatures reach beyond 200°C which helps prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

What's the difference between an oak fire door and a standard oak door?

The level of protection in the event of a fire is the biggest difference between standard oak doors and FD30 oak doors.

While a standard oak internal door will not resist fire and smoke, an FD30 oak door is engineered to keep fire and smoke at bay for at least 30 minutes. This resistance gives you or your building occupants a critical window of time in which to escape and limits the level of damage to your property.

A solid oak fire door is constructed differently from a standard oak door, too. Solid oak, while beautiful, is prone to splits, cracks, and warping over time. This is caused by changes in humidity, moisture, and room temperature. That’s why our modern oak fire doors are built around an engineered solid core, finished with a real oak veneer surface.

The engineered solid core does not expand and contract with humidity changes as much as solid timber and is therefore less prone to splitting, cracking, or warping. The oak veneer finish gives you the authentic look and feel of natural oak, only with added stability and durability.

The engineered core also makes our FD30 oak fire doors thicker than standard oak doors (44mm vs the standard 35mm), they are also heavier and better at blocking sound.
