Need to know Door Regulations

If you’re as keen on DIY as we are, you may be undertaking a building project yourself. If this is the case, you need to consider some of the basic door regulations to ensure that your project is up to code. We’ve put together a quick guide to some of the simplest door regulations you’ll need to consider.

  • 1. Thermal Heat Loss

Your building is required to be energy efficient. Taking steps to reduce the amount of heat lost through glazing in both windows and doors can go a long way to achieving greater energy efficiency. Your doors should comply with the requirements of the Building Regulations by controlling the amount of heat that is allowed to pass through the glass and framework. This is measured as a U- Value that should not be exceeded.

  • 2. Safety Glazing

This needs to be provided for any glass in a critical area. Any glazed door up to 1500mm from floor level must be fitted with safety glazing in order to meet this regulation.

  • 3. Fire Safety

External doors may require fire resistance by being self-closing and fire resistant for a certain time period. We offer a number ofFire Doorsthat will meet the requirements of this regulation.

  • 4. Access to Buildings

If you’re thinking about replacing the main entrance doors in a dwelling built since 1999, you must ensure that the threshold remains level. This enables people, especially those with disabilities, to have continued access to the building.
